H&M, Wal-Mart Destroy Unsold Clothing

Excerpt:
While H&M's destroy-and-discard policy is a missed opportunity in this time of need, the fast fashion retailer isn't the only one to practice these extreme measures. Magnus also found bags full of clothes priced with Wal-Mart tags, and each item had a hole punched through it.

  1. Needlessly cruel. What possible motivation could they have for this? I understand them not wanting just anyone making a profit on products they couldn't shift, that's just the nature of business. But that's why you donate them to a homeless charity. No-one's making money off them but it's making a world of difference to someone who's homeless.

I don't know if it's just that they don't want their brand associated with the homeless but that's a ridiculous argument, as well as a cruel one. The unpleasant fact is, few would bother to even give someone who's homeless the time of day, let alone notice what brand their clothes were. And even if they did, I somehow doubt that it would stop them shopping at H&M. The brand isn't being tarnished, retail jobs aren't being put at risk, the business isn't going to go under. This can't be passed off as one of those cruel-but-necessary decisions.
